It's November--my favorite month when we occasionally get to enjoy some true fall-ish days in Houston. Hermann Park is gorgeous this time of year--especially McGovern Centennial Gardens and the Japanese Garden. In the mood for a little urban hike? Check out the Urban Forest, too. (Wear bug repellent for that one--take it from me.) Of course, a spin on the carousel at The Commons is perfection this time of year in the gorgeous weather! They recently added a new ticket system that is quick and easy for onsite purchasing when you arrive. You can hop on and off of the trains on the way to make it even more of an event. Also, as of this last update, the train is decked out in lights for the holiday season.
Another great way to enjoy Hermann Park is to volunteer together there as a family! Here is the link to the Hermann Park Individual and Family Volunteer Days--Sign up to register for a shift!
If you are visiting Houston (or a local visiting the district) this month, here is a quick highlight of events in or very close to the walkable Museum District zones. (In my mind, this means they are a close walk or 5-minute drive away.) As always, double check the links before you head over. There is always a possibility for last-minute changes or errors on my part.
Zoo Lights starts up at the Houston Zoo at the end of the month, and November is a great time to attend. We were gifted Zoo Lights tickets from a friend one year, and I assumed it would be packed. I was pleasantly surprised to find the crowd was light and there was no waiting to see Santa. I wondered if this was a fluke, but in later years other moms have told me that the crowd is so much lighter when they have visited in November. It seems the early bird catches the worm in this situation, so it might be a fun way to entertain Thanksgiving holiday guests or kids out of school.

GET EXCITED!
Mid/Late-November kicks off my favorite time at the Children's Museum of Houston! They celebrate winter holidays and festivals from around the world, and I learn as much as the kids do. Plus, the exhibits are just so beautiful. Check the holiday exhibits out toward the end of the month, but there are lots of other fun celebrations happening earlier in the month, too.
MUSEUM FREE DAYS
These are a few hotspots for free museum visits that are ongoing throughout the year:
Free Family Thursdays at the Children's Museum of Houston: 5 - 8 pm
Free Tuesday Evenings at Houston Museum of Natural Science: 5 - 8 pm--If you are a local who hasn't been in awhile, you won't even recognize the middle of the main floor. There is a huge new permanent exhibit.
Free Thursdays at Museum of Fine Arts Houston: 11 am - 9 pm--Don't miss the tunnels with kids!
Free Family Thursdays at the Health Museum: 2-7 pm; Reserve tickets before making the trip (but they usually are available at the door, too); Live organ dissections on most Thursdays
Free Thursday Exhibition at Asia Society Texas: 12 - 7 pm
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft--Always Free
The Menil Collection--Always Free (and the lawn outside of it is always gorgeous)
***There are many others that are also great for the whole family, but these are the big ones with kids.***
ADULT-BREAK PICKS THIS MONTH
I'm looking forward to FINALLY trying Late August this month for a night out with friends. This restaurant is just up the Metro's Red Line from the Museum District, and I keep hearing how great it is. Check it out if you are in the area. It's sister restaurant, Lucille's, is also right in the heart of the Museum District near the Children's Museum with a lovely outdoor garden and live music on some days. I have a standing monthly lunch meeting at Rado, the other sister restaurant, located in Historic Third Ward (all of this area, including the Museum District, is Third Ward for those visiting). Rado's Fried Green Tomato Sandwich there is SO GOOD as well as the Vegan Skillet (and this is coming from a non-vegan). All of these restaurants are concepts from Lucille's Hospitality Group.
I'm looking forward to returning to 13 Celsius (nearby in Midtown) for another night out this month. One of my good friends and I visited this place last year and were so pleased with the friendly bartenders and impressive menu selections. They also have a cute patio area, and overall vibe is warm and inviting.
Cheating here because my child will be with me, but I am excited about returning to Davis St. Grille with the family soon. My dad loves gumbo, and I have been excited for him to try their seafood gumbo. He will finally get to this month at a family dinner. When my husband and I visit, our favorite entree is the Thai Style Snapper for Two. It feeds two and is a fun twist on the fish my husband and I enjoyed all the time when we lived in Florida. We also love the twist on the key lime pie, the Velvety Key Lime Cheesecake. If you are ever there for brunch, you MUST get Mama's Buttermilk Biscuits with Pepper Jelly.
Late Night at the MFAH event--free for members, cocktails, etc. MFAH has reignited Happy Hour Fridays, staying open late from 5-8 pm on most Fridays this fall. The museum is open until 9 pm. Last entry is at 8 pm. Cafe Leonelli specials end at 8 pm. I also love the MFAH Art Bites tours on various Thursday and Friday evenings.
The MFAH also has a Night at the MFAH event coming up on Saturday, November 16th. These events include cocktails, curator chats, and live music.
If you need a zen break, Asia Society Texas offers Yogo in the Bamboo Garden (Saturday, 11/16). The Museum of Fine Arts Houston also offers bilingual yoga on Sunday, 11/24 at 11 am: MFAH on the Move--Bilingual Yoga.
If you prefer a high-energy workout, save the date for Sunday, 11/17 at 11 am for MFAH on the Move--Bilingual Zumba.
The "Designing Motherhood" exhibition is opening at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Save the dates for the Designing Motherhood Fall Opening Reception (Friday, 11/8 at 6 pm) & the Curator + Artist Walkthrough (Saturday, 11/9 at 3 pm). If you have a little one 5 years or under, reserve the ArtSit to enjoy the exhibit along with them.
Get into the holiday spirit on Saturday, 11/16 with a Contemporary Wreath-Making Workshop offered by Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Registration required.
The Health Museum has been offering "Paint & Process" workshops to provide an introspective creative outlet. The November workshop is scheduled for Sunday, November 17th, and registration is required.
That's all for now, but I will update this list if other events cross my feed! Feel free to share others that you know in the district in the comments.
