The District's "Secret" Playground

We still have about two more weeks left until the grand opening of the new playground at the Hermann Park Commons. If you visit the area and want to give the kids a place to burn off some energy, there is a GATED playground at the Judson Robinson, Jr. Community Center, on the far edge of Hermann Park near the corner of Almeda and Hermann Park Dr. (2020 Hermann Park Dr., Houston, TX 77004).

It is a space-themed, mid-sized playground. For the babies and smaller toddlers, there is a toddler play area with a small slide, floating stepping stones, and baby swings. For the older kids, there are larger slides, regular swings, a spinning rope climber, and a large, stationary rope climber (both shaped like planets or the moon or whatever you want them to be). Within the enclosed gated area, there is also a fair amount of grassy space for tossing a ball round.

There are restrooms inside of the community center (check the opening and closing times online, but generally it does close pretty early on the Saturdays). You can play at the playground even if the community center is closed. Just walk through the playground gates.

This is a favorite park among many neighborhood families because it is easy to get to, there is just enough to do for a short visit, and it never seems to be crowded (that's where the "secret" part comes in, ha ha). Be aware that it does get very sunny, but there is a little shade available under the trees. Also, there is no seating and no trash cans, but you can sit on the little concrete wall and toss trash in the trash cans in the nearby parking lot.

All in all, it is a solid playground for a quick and easy visit!
