***As a Fall 2024 update, the name Mo' Better Brews has now been changed to Mo' Brunch & Brews, but the food remains the same.***
Mo' Brunch & Brews, located at 1201 Southmore Blvd., has quickly become a fixture in the neighborhood. It is a vegan restaurant, but don't let that stop you if you are not! I'm not vegan, and I, along with many other omnivores, love this place. Here's why...
The Vibes
This place has good vibes, and that likely comes directly from the leadership. Coincidentally, I have seen the owners in various spaces around town, and they are authetically kind, creative, community-oriented people. It's no surprise that they have created a space that reflects them. The space is modern yet warm, clean, and inviting. Over the years, I have enjoyed chatting with the staff members, and Mo' Better Brews is a true neighborhood hangout. The soulful music and memorabilia also add to the cool vibe of the space.
The owners, Chasitie and Courtney Lindsay, have children and the oldest loves to help out in the kitchen. Inspired by this, Courtney authored the book, Chase the Chef. It features a sweet story coupled with tips for kids in the kitchen and beautiful illustrations. You can usually find copies to purchase on the shelf in the corner near the back of the restaurant or at Kindred Stories, a quick drive or bike trail ride away.
The Patio
In Houston, we pay a tax in the form of blazing hot summers, but, during the rest of the year, our paycheck comes in the form of mild winters with plenty of beautiful fall and spring days that are perfect for hanging out on the patio. There are also special events that would make a nice parent's night out including paint nights, movie nights, and DJs on the patio. Check their Instagram to see what's upcoming.
The Food
Again, I am very much not vegan, and neither are most of my family members. However, that hasn't stopped us from enjoying the delicious food that Mo' Better Brews serves up. Here are our favorites, starting with our kid's favs:
The Pasta on the Kid's Menu: My child is one of those rare children who doesn't like spaghetti. However, we attended an event at Mo' Better Brews and the girl devoured her plate of spaghetti with their classic, homemade tomato sauce that truly does remind me of the classic red sauces I have had in Italy. The true flavors shine through.
The Waffles on the Kids Menu: I mean, do I really need to say more. She loves them.
The Hot Honey 'Shrooms & Waffles: It's the vegan version of chicken and waffles with a slightly spicy twist. I am typically not a fan of agave syrup, but I love these and the taco version...
The Brunch Tacos (also currently available as the Wednesday Special with a glass of wine): You get your choice of 3 tacos, and I like to order 2 of the Hot Honey Shrooms and 1 of the Truffle Hash. Again, beginning to sound like a broken record, but I typically dislike truffle oil. Perhaps other people overdo the flavor--I'm not sure. But I really enjoy the Truffle Hash taco here.
The Boudain Sushi Roll: We tried this when my sister-in-love visited from out of town. She had seen Mo' Better Brews on Instagram and just had to try it out. We all enjoyed this yummy roll!
The Pancake Flight: This is what I ordered on the same day we tried the roll listed above, and it was deliciously sweet--just like I like my brunch. You get the Strawberry Cheezecake, Peach Cobbler, and Pecan Pie flavors on the flight.
The Cauliwings: Their vegan version of wings, you can order them tossed in Houston Sauce Co. sauce. I love the Buffalo.
Okay, moving on to the beverages:
The Coffee: The house blend coffee, Black & Indigo Blend, is truly unique, sweet, and bright and has earned an outstanding score from Coffee Review. Definitely try it when you stop in. I regularly purchase the beans for our home.
The Charcoal Lemonade: A couple of summers ago, we told my daughter this was "Space Lemonade" because of the smokey color, and she loved it. It's definitely refreshing on a hot Houston day as is the iced coffee that one of my friend's loves.
The Glad It's Nite & the other lively-named cocktails: I haven't tried all of the cocktails, but I have enjoyed the "Glad It's Nite" lavender lemon drop. Next up for me to try is the Foxy Brown! I also love the moscato they keep in stock.
Judging from the line out the door during brunch and the often-packed weekday lunch hour, I know they have many other good offerings. If I am not mistaken, a favorite of one of the owner's is the loaded nachos. However, I haven't tried them yet because I have all of these other favorites that I want when I go. The moral of the story: There is a lot of good food--the Chef has made sure of that.
The Partnership
Mo' Brunch & Brews also sells beans from Three Keys Coffee--and this has become the official coffee brand of our household. Check the shelf in the corner near the register to see what's in stock if you visit. My husband loves the Bossa Nova, and he and I both enjoy Love Supremo (currently one of my favs), 33 1/3 (the Three Keys Coffee signature blend), The Quartet, Ear Candy, Double A Train. These are regulars in our house, but we also enjoy some of the other blends. To say that I am a fanatic is an understatement. I think my circle of friends might be getting tired of me prattling on about it--that is until I surprise them with a cup and they, too, fall in love. I travel with the single-serve pour over packets whenever possible so that I can take them on work trips or vacations. I'm thrilled to have Mo' Better Brews as a supplier right in the neighborhood and the brick and mortar Three Keys Coffee just a short Metro ride away in Finn Hall. I stop often on my way to work to stock up, and I will have to do a post dedicated to them in the future.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you get to visit Mo' Better Brews soon! Check the current hours and menu before you go.
